YH&YT is an excellent introduction to Namadgi National Park as it combines two popular short walks in the south of the park. The first is an easy 6km (2.5 hour) return walk across the extensive grasslands of Gudgenby Valley and passed hundreds of curious kangaroos to the Yankee Hat rock paintings. Carbon dating show that Aboriginal people began using the shelter more than 800 years ago. Evidence from nearby sites suggests that people were camping in the area, and presumably painting, as long as 3,700 years ago. The paintings at Yankee Hat are well preserved and represent animals as well as many abstract and human-like figures. Their meanings may have varied according to the viewer’s level of initiation into tribal tradition.
The second walk, a 12km drive further south, is an easy 4km (2-3 hour) on track return walk through peppermint forest, across swampy grassland and a climb of about 160 vertical metres through Mountain and Snow Gum forest to the trig point on Mount Boboyan. There are good 360 degree views from here taking in nearly all the major mountains of Namadgi, including the nearby Mt Gudgenby, as well as Mt Kelly, Mt Burbidge and Mt Namadgi. A short distance beyond the summit, and across a significant and visible geological boundary between sedimentary rocks to the east and granite to the west, is an impressive granite platform with sweeping views north and west across Namadgi.
There will be no pre-trip meeting for this day walk, with transport and other arrangements to be sorted by email and phone by Friday.
