The spectacular Tinderry Range is a familiar landmark to travellers heading south on the Monaro Highway towards Cooma and the Snowy Mountains. Rising above the village of Michelago, about 50km south of Canberra and within easy reach of the ANU, the range is characterised by huge granite monoliths and dominated by Tinderry and Tinderry Twin peaks, rises abruptly from cleared and undulating hills east of Michelago. This day walk will explore the granite outcrops, boulders and slabs east of and atop the summit of Mt Tinderry (1619m). The walk commences at Round Flat Fire Trail and roughly follows the line of Roberts Creek to the crest of the range. The route will be mainly off track, with potential for thick scrub in places, and some rock scrambling. There’ll also be good all-round views, including west across to the eastern edge of Namadgi. Distance: about 13km / +600m of climbing. This walk is suitable for beginners. There will be no pre-trip meeting. Transport and other arrangements will be made by email/phone. Total distance for the walk is about 14km with about 500m of ascent.
There will be no pre-trip meeting for this day walk, with transport and other arrangements to be sorted out either at the ANUMC welcome BBQ or by email and phone on Saturday.
