Tired of relying on other peoples' bolts? Think its time to add an extra layer of complexity to your usual sport climbs? Heard of trad climbing but never had the opportunity to learn? This is the trip for you!
Go nuts and get pumped for a cracking day making some bomber friends and learning some trad essentials.
The plan is to spend the day in the post-exam sun down at Wickerslack crag, practicing some placements of natural protection + more!
Wickerslack (or White Rocks) is a beautiful limestone crag with some lovely crack systems - a perfect spot to start a career in trad climbing.
The guide for Wickerslack can be found here: https://www.thecrag.com/en/climbing/australia/river-crags/wickerslack-crag
If you weren't already sold on such a cool spot to learn - most (if not all) of the routes listed on the guide have sport anchors, meaning we can spend the day practicing placement with the safety of top ropes!
Depending of time, skills covered over the day may include (but are not limited to):
- Placing different forms of natural protection
- Nuts
- Cams
- How to choose and rack gear for a climb
- Building trad anchors
- Assessing risk in Traditional climbing
+ Any other areas of interest within the sphere of trad climbing or just climbing in general!
This trip is aimed at people who have had a decent level of experience sport climbing (outdoors) and are wanting to experience trad climbing for the first time. Experience leading sport routes is essential - this is a trad climbing trip not a lead climbing trip :)
List of essential gear:
- Helmet
- Harness (with gear loops)
- Chalk (optional)
- Climbing shoes
- Belay device + Carabiner
- Water + Lunch + Snacks
- Any trad gear one may have lying around :)
I will be providing more details on this list once numbers and participants are confirmed.
Interested? When you sign up please provide a short description of what experience you have outdoor climbing so I can get an idea of whether this trip would be right for you!
I am trying to not make the trip too large (so participants can get the most out of it) and would be great to get a balance of experienced trad climbers and new comers as well as making sure we have enough drivers, so please note that signing up doesn’t guarantee a spot on the trip for that reason.
