Join me for an exciting off track walk to Tinderry Peak, a stunning peak of granite sitting at over 1600m above sea level!
This is going to be quite a difficult walk with a lot of off track walking. Therefore, Alicia and Andi (who are fitter and more experienced than I) will be co-leading this trip with me and helping out with navigation :)
This walk will be approx. 15 kms long with approx. 600m of elevation gain. But note that we may end up walking further and experiencing more elevation gain if we make navigational errors!!
There will also be a chance to see some fascinating geology along the way! Before we summit Tinderry peak, we'll first visit some knotted schist nearby, and we will try to observe the contact between the granite which intruded into the older sediments in the area.
Here's a dropbox link with my proposed route marked on a geological and topographic map. I have also attached a .kmz file of the route which you can open on google earth.

This walk will involve a fair amount of off track bush-bashing. Some rock scrambling will also be required to reach the top of tinderry peak. Please do not sign up if you don't have much experience bushwalking! This is not a very beginner friendly walk (sorry!). You should have prior experience in off track walking and have a good level of fitness. It's definitely not a trip that I would be comfortable leading on my own so that in itself gives you an indication of how difficult it is!
When you sign up, please indicate your prior experience in bushwalking if I haven't walked with you before!! I need to know your experience level to judge your ability to complete this walk in order to avoid putting you into a situation which you are unprepared for.
Please also indicate if you have a car and can drive!
Please bring:
-hat
-sunscreen if you need it
- water (3L minimum!!)
-rain jacket + warm layers
-lunch+ snacks
-HEAD TORCH + spare batteries!
Depart ANU sport at ~5:00 am. Drive to the beginning of the round flat fire trail (~1hr 15 minute drive). Walk ~5km up East Tinderry fire trail, and arrive at knotted schist. Backtrack ~1km along east Tinderry fire trail, until we reach a saddle. Begin walking off track towards the west, and make our way to the top of Tinderry peak (some rock scrambling involved towards the end!). Walk down Tinderry peak towards Robert's creek. Follow Robert's creek until we reach round flat fire trail and follow round flat fire trail for a little while until we reach east Tinderry trail again. Head south along east Tinderry fire trail until we arrive back at the cars. Finally, drive back to Canberra.
