- Except for emergency reasons or at trip leader’s discretion, all participants must commit to the trip in full, i.e. both days of the weekend.
Kate Martin and I will co-lead the trip. Our plan is to do two canyons: Hat Hill and Rocky Creek. Neither will require any abseiling. Unless we have enough number of 4WDs to drive and camp on Newnes Plateau, we will stay at Mt Wilson. We will leave ANU on Friday 1700 or Saturday 0700, and leave campground on Sunday by 1700 at the latest.
Hat Hill
Hat Hill Canyon is a good canyon in Hat Hill Creek, north of Blackheath. It has been known for many years. Up until mid 2008 the Blackheath Sewage Treatment Plant was releasing treated effluent into the creek, so the canyon was not often done. The closure of the plant should increase the water quality in the creek.
Hat Hill Canyon consists of three distinct sections, separated by pleasant creek walking. No abseils are required, though there are a few short swims.

Rocky Creek
Rocky Creek Canyon is a long, dark and spectacular canyon in the South Wolgan area. It has no abseils and is thus popular with beginners.
It was discovered on a joint SUBW - UNSWBWC trip in 1976 by Dave Noble and Bob Sault. There is a short, fun upper constriction some 4km upstream, with some jumps and slides but most parties only do the lower constriction. We may also cover Twister Canyon if time permits.
