Who is in need of a quick backcountry fix?
The plan is to leave Canberra before 5 am on Sunday and drive to Guthega dam or dead horse gap via a quick stop in Jindabyne. we will session the hill close to the car to avoid getting lost.
we will ski till sunset and return via dinner at Cooma
you will need your own skis and ski equipment, or to hire from the gear store on Thursday after the pre-trip meeting.
- skis, poles, and skins
- AT boots
i will hire a PLB, shovel, probe, and a few avvy beacons for avalanche safely, and check the snow conditions closer to the day. these will be overkill for the terrain we will be riding in.
i recommend using shell outerwear instead of traditional ski jackets and pants, as it can get quite hot while skinning to the top. zippered layers of fleece or merino wool are best to regulate temperature. cotton shirts are not recommended.
to bring:
snacks and/or lunch to eat while out.
spare layers to leave in the car to change into if wet
backpack, preferably waterproof
thick wool socks
beanie
ski gloves
sunglasses and/or goggles
please indicate both downhill experience and backcountry experience when signing up. I am happy to teach backcountry technique, but black diamond level resort skiing is a prerequisite.
Let me know if you are able to drive, and whether your car is all wheel drive, or if you have chains.
