I'm thinking of getting a couple of crew together to go to Victoria for the X-Marathon Adventure Race.
What is adventure racing? Its a team-based multisport event that usually contains a mixture of orienteering/rogaining, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking and sometimes mystery disciplines. Navigate between checkpoints that are revealed to you a few hours before the race starts. You don't really know what you are in for until you get there - which is part of the adventure! More details about this specific adventure race can be found here: https://xmarathon.com.au/race-information
I can take up to 4 people in my car, but only have room for 2 mountain bikes (my own plus one other). We'll be driving down on the Friday afternoon, camping, and then driving back later on the Sunday. We will need to sort ourselves into teams. Please let me know if you are interested in doing the half course (12hr) or the Mini (4) at registration, and if you have an event partner already. I don't yet have a partner for the Mini and would happily go with a beginner. I have completed 4hr, 6hr and 12 hr events recently.
You'll need to be pretty fit - the shortest distance contains around 4 hours of constant activity (mountain biking, hiking/running, kayaking). You should be comfortable with kayaking (if you've paddled on lake burley griffin, you're experienced enough), and with mountain biking (most of the trails are likely to be similar to fire trails. Its not technical down-hill mountain biking for the Mini, but you should still be comfortable breaking on gravel). Its also useful to know how to use a compass! If you need some basic navigational practice, I'm happy to run a short session or share some of my recent AR maps for you to get the idea.
Note: this is a commercially run event at attracts a high entrance fee, which includes kayak hire etc.
Note: attendees will need some compulsory gear, which will include mountain bike with helmet, compass, first aid kit and other items.
