Archived trip from old website run by Tommo
The idea would be to a get a group of keen ANUMCers over to the Remarkables to gain some climbing skills in a supportive environment.
If you are interested head over to the festival website and look at the clinics available to see if there is something there for you. I would suggest that you register for any clinic you are interested in as soon as possible as they are starting to fill up already.
So what’s this festival all about?
-The festival brings together a huge cross section of climbers from around NZ and the world.
-Beginners get to rub shoulders and share the rope with the top winter alpine climbers in NZ.
-There are clinics, competitions, races and social gatherings to advance and promote modern mixed climbing.
-Showcasing the new and existing route potential on NZ’s most accessible multi pitch winter training area, The Remarkables.
-Sharing local knowledge and forming new climbing partnerships.
-Fundraising for the NZAC expedition fund.
There are a number of clinics that are run which cover almost all skill levels. Although I would strongly suggest that you have at least some kind of snow and general climbing experience to make it worth your while. It is a great way to learn a few more skills and suck the knowledge out of more experienced climbers.
The clinics available include:
-Chicks N Picks - (Woman of any level can do chicks ‘N’ picks)
-Ice & Mixed Climbing Clinic
-Snow Craft Clinic
-Learning to Lead on Traditional Protection Clinic
-Introduction to Back Country Ski Touring and Avalanche Rescue Clinic
-Avalanche Awareness Clinic
The majority of clinics are taught by fellow climbers not professional guides. The aim of the festival is for climbers to show other climbers new skills and share knowledge. This is not a guided weekend and anyone attending will have to be comfortable making their own decisions regarding personal safety. It is important that if at any time you are uncomfortable with any of the risks being taken you make the appropriate decisions for your own personal safety.
This would be a self supported trip in that you would organise your registration and transport to the festival yourself and then meet up in Queenstown. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend this year though I am happy to help out and Coordinate where I can.
Accommodation:
Many of the festival participants stay at the Frankton motor inn. I would suggest that you do the same so that you can carpool more easily with other festival participants to get up the hill every day. It is fairly cheap if the cabin is split between 4-6 people.
