Archived trip from old website run by Richard Salmons
Many of us have skied all around the Main Range, the treeless, high crest of the Snowy Mountains, but somehow we have missed a proper exploration of its southernmost extremity, the Rams Head Range.
The trip involves climbing steeply from the road at Dead Horse Gap for about two hours to the South Rams Head. From there we can explore the prominent feature even further south than that (the "far south Rams Head"?). There appear to be numerous ski slopes off these peaks as well as some excellent viewpoints.
As time allows, we can climb for another hour to the Rams Head itself, before enjoying a long ski run from the Thredbo resort boundary following the summer hiking trail all the way back to the highway.
I initially posted this as an overnight trip, but due to other commitments can probably only make it a day trip. Still, there will be plenty of skiing done! There is scope for a mix of skill levels, but you need to be confident skiing intermediate slopes on club skis. (Note: this trip is ideal for anyone who owns their own AT or telemark skis.)
