Archived trip from old website run by AlexBoiko
We will start from Guthega Dam in the morning and head up to Consett Stephen pass. Depending on how long it takes, we will either ski the Guthega river valley (with a pause for lunch) or head up to the Main Range or Tate East Ridge. Depending on the strength of the group and the conditions, we will return the same way or via the suspension bridge at Illawong. To complete the circuit, we would need to leave Guthega by 8 (7:30 is better) and reach the pass by 10:30 at the latest. If we do not, we will just enjoy the Guthega river valley (probably multiple times).
This trip should be possible on both touring and AT gear (whatever you have/can hire, but make sure you know how to use it), but we will adjust our route and plans depending on how our gear fares in the prevailing conditions. In addition to the usual day-tour gear, participants must bring a head torch, a closed cell foam mat, a warm jacket and a warm beanie that would allow you to survive the night (but not necessarily be comfortable). Participants will also be asked to carry part of the group's emergency gear (first aid kit, epirb, stove, and bothy bag)
This is a Saturday day-trip and we will need to leave Canberra early! We will leave Guthega early, but not shortly after sunrise (to avoid the worst of the morning ice).
Signing up doesn't guarantee a place (participants will be selected based on experience and ability). When signing up, please describe your ability in the comments and mention the trips (and their leaders) you've been on with the club. THE TRIP IS CURRENTLY FULL, BUT FEEL FREE TO SIGN UP TO BE WAITLISTED IF SOMEONE DROPS OUT.
Although this trip is only a Medium (because it is only about 5km and 400m vertical to the pass, it may become as long as 25km with 800m up and then down if we go on the full circuit via Tate. Please let me know if you would not want to do the circuit when you sign up. WE'LL AIM FOR THE FULL CIRCUIT AT THIS STAGE, but will of course back off if the conditions are bad or we are slow.
See description above.
