Hi All,
I am planning on running an intermediate-level mountaineering trip in Mid-August. This trip is for people who already have experience in mountaineering and are comfortable with the use of crampons, ice axes and mountaineering rope techniques (glacier travel, pitching etc). An example of the minimum experience required is to have attended a beginner mountaineering trip run by the club. When you sign up please let me know what your experience is so that I can gauge who is in the group. We will have to cover a reasonable distance between where the cars will be parked and Blue Lake where we will be practicing/playing in the snow so you need to either be comfortable on ski’s or a good snowshoer...
This is a trip intended for experienced & budding mountaineers to practice and refresh their skills and meet other closet mountaineers. Depending on conditions and the group, the skills I'm hoping to practice are:
1. Anchors and pitching
2. Ice climbing
3. Crevasse rescue
4. Avalanche awareness and rescue
I expect everyone to help facilitate all the different activities & skill sessions.
There will be a pre-trip on Thursday the 13th before the trip where we will collect club gear and also practice rope techniques (e.g. crevasse rescue practice session in the gym). It may be necessary to hire gear from Wilderness Sport in Jindabyne if the club doesn’t have enough gear.
The general gist of the trip will be (flexible plan):
1. Thursday Night: Pre-trip and gear collection in Canberra
2. Saturday: Group to meet in Canberra at 5am and drive to Cooma where they will meet Maya & Andrew. Drive to Guthega with the aim of being there by 8am. We will then set off on ski's for the bowl to the east of the saddle between Mt Twynam and Little Twynam where we will camp. Mountaineer & play in the snow! On Saturday afternoon we will aim to practice pitching and glacier travel and pitch our way up Mt Twynam.
3. On Sunday morning we will head to Blue Lake to hopefully get some Ice climbing in! Head back to cars in the afternoon and drive back to Canberra.
When you sign up please indicate your level of mountaineering skill/experience, whether you have a car we can use, and your level of involvement with the ANUMC.
