The Cascade Hut Trail is a 22km overnight return trip (with packs). Beginning at Dead Horse Gap, the walk follows the Thredbo River south of Dead Horse Gap goes over the crest of the Great Dividing Range, with views to distant Victoria, through snow gum forest then down Bobs Ridge to Cascade Hut (1480m) for the night. We'll be camping overnight beside the hut. This timber slab stockmen's hut was built in 1935 and along with the Cascades region inspired Elyne Mitchell's Silver Brumby books. Best of all we'll be keeping an eager eye out for the locals, the Brumbies! This region has one of the biggest brumby populations in Australia so the chances of a sighting are good.
** Please only sign up if you have previous overnight experience bush walking. Could you please include a description of previous experience in your sign up details too.
Leave Canberra about 7am. Park cars at Cascade Trail Head (or maybe at 400m up the road at Dead Horse Gap). Beginning walking before 11am and follow the Cascade Trail to Cascade Hut, aiming to arrive around 3pm. Return to cars along the same route.
