Archived trip from old website run by Jessica.Hancock
As well as being such a satisfying distance to this destination, this skiing trip should also be relatively straightforward for intermediate skiers (or beginner skiers who are confident snow-campers and happy to fall over lots with a large pack on). Starting at the Selwyn Snowfields ski resort, we'll park the cars and follow a 4WD track to the Australian Alps Walking Track, and ski along this for a time before dropping off down to 4 Mile Hut. This hut is pretty tiny, so while we'll be able to cook dinner in there, participants will most definitely have to carry four-season tents with them. If the weather gods are kind (and the forecast suggests that they will be) we should get lovely views out to Mount Jagungal.
Snow cover may not be great, given the elevation (about 1500m at Selwyn and 1475 at 4 Mile Hut), but the trail should be through open trees and without much traversing, so any sections that we need to walk will be covered quickly. Wilderness Sports is currently reporting thin touring cover, so fingers crossed for improvement. http://www.wildernesssports.com.au/content.toy?content=weather
Extra side trips will depend on group ability and the time we're willing to leave Canberra on Saturday morning. Participants also have the option of going up to the high country on Friday night to save waking up pre-dawn on Saturday.
Pre-trip is at The Coffee Grounds (in the ANU Sport and Recreation building) at 5:45pm on Thursday, which will give us time to very briefly discuss the trip before the gear store opens at 6pm. If you haven't skied with me before, include a description of your previous skiing and snow camping experience when signing up.
