This easy two/three day walk in the northern Kosciusko National Park explores the area around Blue Waterholes, where the amazingly blue and rather chilly waters of Cave Creek emerge from underground to flow down through Clarke Gorge, over a waterfall and onto the Goodradigbee River. The limestone landscape is riddled with caves and sinkholes, all undeveloped and some open for our exploration. We’ll depart Canberra Saturday morning, park near Blue Waterholes and walk about 4km downstream to camp at the confluence of Cave Creek and the Goodradigbee River. The first part of the walk is along a good track which criss-crosses the creek on stepping stones while the second part, below the waterfall, involves an off track descent down a relatively open forested spur to a suburb shaded and grassy campsite. If the conditions are hot we’ll wade, and occasionally swim, down the creek itself. The second day we’ll return to camp at Blue Waterholes within a few hundred metres of the cars, exploring caves along the way. If people are interested, and transport is available, some of the group can head back to Canberra that Sunday afternoon. The third day (Monday) we’ll explore more caves and visit historic Coolamine Homestead with its cluster of 19th century timber buildings before returning to Canberra. This walk provides plenty of opportunity for photography, swimming, exploring caves and just relaxing by the water. Maps: Peppercorn 1:25,000, Rules Point 1:25,00.
