Beautiful views, mountain ash woodlands and alpine plains.
This rarely visited and trackless ridge in the underrated northern end of Kosciuszko national park is not to be missed. We will also be making camp at one of the quainter huts in the whole park – The beautiful Witzes Hut, built in 1952.
Who is the walk for?
This walk is suitable for fit beginners who are interested in learning the fundamentals of off track navigation and route finding. You will need to be relatively fit and be able to handle uneven terrain and steep uphills.
The walk:
We will aim to leave Canberra around 6am on the day, stopping at the Adaminaby bakery for a break.
We start our walk on the undulating Nungar creek and Alpine creek firetrails. After around 12km of firetrail walking we will start the off track section of the walk by crossing Boggy plain and ascending the saddle below Blackfellows hill. We will attempt to pick up the remnants of an old bridle trail to Blanket hill and finally descend through some thick scrub to Witzes hut for the night. Day 1 will see us walking around 23km with around 800 vertical meters climbed.
Day 2 will be an easy 10km walk back to the car along the Nungar creek firetrail.
The weather:
Cold… Windy…
Pre trip and transport:
We will have a pre trip meeting the Thursday before the walk so we can go over the plan and organise gear. I will send around a list of things to pack for the walk prior to the pre trip. I will drive one car on the day and I will also need someone else to drive another. Please let me know if you can when registering
I will decide on participants 2 weeks prior to the trip starting.
Registrations will open at the beginning of April.
