This is an overnight ski trip on the classic route Dead Horse Gap - Cascade Hut. Expect skiing through patches of beautiful snow gums, open frost hollows, brumbies, views towards Kosi, and all without the annoying climb out of Guthega that is the feature of so many backcountry skiing trips.
The basic plan: is drive up Saturday morning, ski the 10km to Cascade hut following the fire trail, camp next to the hut, and return the next day, with possible side trips without packs on Saturday afternoon and/or Sunday morning. The plan is of course subject to weather and snow conditions.
This trip is suitable as an introduction to overnight ski tours. However you must already be able to ski. Sections of this route are on a narrow fire trail bordered by trees. You need sufficient control to avoid those trees with a heavy pack on! A bombproof snowplough plus a good hockey stop are essential.
A great packing list is here: http://anumc.org.au/files/Skiing what to bring.pdf, I would only add that unless you have a really thick mat, two sleeping mats is a good idea. AT skis are not necessary for this trip; if you're hiring from the gear store please take the telemark (or cross-country) gear.
When you sign up, please give an indication of your previous cross-country ski experience so I have a rough idea of who's coming. Registrations without this information will be deleted. Also please indicate whether you have a car, and if so whether you have any of the following: 4WD, chains, parks pass, roof rack for skis.
