This beautiful 2 day walk takes in some of the less traveled areas of the Main Range, including the lofty Mt Twynam, Australia's third highest mountain (2,196m).
Who is this walk for?
This walk is perfect for anyone who wants to learn the basics of off track alpine walking and camping. Australia's alpine regions offer their own unique set of challenges and I hope by the end this walk you will have the foundations and basics to enjoy the mountains and walk safely in them.
During the walk I will cover the following:
- Off track navigation and map reading.
- Campsite selection.
- Anticipating and dealing with poor weather.
You will need to be relatively fit and be able to handle uneven terrain and steep uphills.
The plan:
We will leave Canberra at 7am Saturday morning and head to Guthega dam where we will park the car and begin our walk. Our points of interest for day 1 will be Guthega trig, Consett Stephens Pass, Mt Tate, Mann Bluff, Mt Anton, Mt Twynam and finishing the day with a glissade down to Pounds creek flats. Day 2 will be shorter and mostly downhill. We will follow the Illawong footpad to the bridge and continue on the Illawong track back to the car.
Day 1 will see us ascending around 800 vertical meters and 15km in distance.
Day 2 will be downhill and around 7km

The weather:
Cold... Windy...
Pre trip and transport:
We will have a pre trip meeting the Thursday before the walk so we can go over the plan and organise gear. I will send around a list of things to pack for the walk prior to the pre trip. I will drive on the day.
