This is a circuit walk over and around the Shoalhaven River, not far from Bungonia Gorge. Expect spectacular views and lots of interesting walking!
We will more or less follow John Evans's route -- dropping down from the Matodora fire trail, to cross the Shoalhaven River, and up and around to Wineglass Tor, then complete the circuit by crossing the Shoalhaven again near Tims Gully and climbing back to the cars. The walk is mostly in unburnt areas, though we'll skirt the edge of the burnt area around Wineglass Tor.
This trip is for experienced walkers only. The route is 15km of mostly off-track walking, with a steep climbs of 500m in the morning and 400m in the afternoon, plus two river crossings.
When you sign up, please indicate
- Your hiking experience, if I haven't walked with you before.
- Whether you have a car we can use. My information is that the access road is passable in a normal 2WD with some care, but if you have a high-clearance vehicle that would make things easier!
- Whether you have the COVID-safe app
In line with our Covid-safe policy: do not attend if you're feeling unwell, have flu-like symptoms, have travelled internationally or been exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, or your health is considered high risk.
Please make sure you bring a head-torch as we might finish after dark.
Also if you're passing the gear store on Thursday and could pick up a PLB for me please let me know!
NB. This part of Morton National Park is not technically within the areas that have re-opened as listed on the webpage. However the park rangers are "99% sure" that it's open since it wasn't burnt in the fires (as you can see here).
