The Kangaroo Valley Escape will be held over the Canberra Day Long Weekend from 5 - 8 Mar 21. A number of Trip Leaders have volunteered their time to run canyoning, kayaking, bushwalking, trail riding and climbing activities in one of the most picturesque parts of NSW.
Each day, participants will be given options to participate in various activities. Nevertheless, not all participants will get to try all activities. Activities will be conducted in accordance with the Club Safety Policies and Procedures.
When signing up, in the comments section please detail:
- Preferred activities
- Previous adventure experience
- Whether you can swim
- If intending to trail ride, whether you have your own bike
Below is the broad plan and equipment considerations (Equipment with asterisks* can be borrowed from the gear store prior to the activity). A more detail plan will be emailed to participants closer to the date.
Transport
Transport will be provided by volunteer drivers. This will include transport to-from Canberra and throughout the weekend. The majority of trip costs will be to reimburse drivers.
Camping
Sites for up to 30 ANUMC members have been locked in at BBendeela Campground in the Kangaroo Valley Facilities include water and toilets. Solid fuel fires are not permitted.
For the camping, participants will need:
- Appropriate campground clothing
- Tent (may only be shared by household group - Covid)*
- Sleeping gear*
- Light source/headlamp
- Towel and toiletries
- Eating utensils
- Cooking equipment (may be shared)*
- Meals
- 3 x breakfast
- 3 x lunch
- 3 x dinner
- Activity snacks
- Compact high energy/GI
Bushwalking
Bushwalks will be steep and up to 20km. For bushwalking, participants will need:
- Sturdy walking shoes
- Hat and sunscreen
- Daypack*
- Water (at least 2L)
- Lunch/snacks
- Personal first aid kit
- Lightsource/headlamp
Canyoning
Canyoning will involves swimming and abseiling. For canyoning, participants will need:
- Swimming gear (to wear under a wetsuit)
- Gloves
- Shoes suitable for swimming (ie light canvas shoes)
- Lunch/snacks
- Water (at least 2L)
- Personal first aid kit
- Lightsource/headlamp
- All other canyoning equipment (harness, helmet, wetsuit, canyon bag) will be provided
Climbing
Climbing will be mostly top-rope with grades suitable for beginners. For climbing participants will need:
- Clothing suitable for climbing
- Daypack
- Lunch/snacks
- Water (at least 2L)
- Personal first aid kit
- All other climbing equipment (helmet, harness, climbing shoes) will be provided
Kayaking
Kayaking will be conducted in flat water up to 15km. For kayaking, participants will need:
- Clothing suitable for getting wet
- Hat and sunscreen
- Thongs or light shoes
- Gloves
- Daypack*
- Lunch/snacks
- Water (at least 2L)
- Personal first aid kit
- All other kayaking equipment (kayak, paddle, PFD) will be provided
Trail riding
Trail riding will be steep (up and down) and up to 35km. For trail riding, participants will need:
- Serviceable mountain bike suitable for fire trails
- Bicycle helmet
- Long shorts and socks
- Gloves
- Daypack*
- Lunch/snacks
- Water (at least 2L)
- Lightsource/headlamp
- Spare tube
- Personal first aid kit
As a multi-day multi-disciplined activity, details for each group will be recorded before departing from the campground.
