(NOTE: This trip was originally meant to occur on 21 Aug but I have postponed it by 1 week as I got covid and need some time to recover.)
Join me this sunday for a bushwalk to sentry box mountain in the southern region of namadgi national park!
The length of this walk will be approx. 13 km with 700 m of elevation gain, with the majority of the walk being off-track. Some minor rock scrambling may also be required in some sections of the walk. This walk is not suitable for complete beginners. However, if you have a moderate level of experience in bushwalking (e.g. if you have done a few long day walks with off track sections and have a moderate fitness level then you should be alright)
We'll depart Canberra by 6am sharp and will drive down to the Shannons flat/Yaouk area via boboyan rd, aiming to begin the walk by 8am. We'll begin the walk from Yaouk rd, about 3 km east of the Nalyappa Homestead, and will follow this route (as set out by Paul Ma from the mntviews blog) I estimate it will take us ~8-9hrs to finish, although we may be slightly faster or slower depending on our walking pace and depending on our navigational skills! Either way, we will aim to finish the walk by sunset at ~ 5:30pm so if we do not reach our destination in time for us to make it back to the cars by sunset, we'll turn back early.
Please bring:
-minimum 2L water
-a rain jacket and warm layers
-beanie+gloves
-food for the day (morning tea, lunch, plenty of snacks)
-a head torch with fresh batteries in it
-I'd recommend wearing proper hiking boots, and full length pants (if you wear shorts you might get scratched up!). You can also wear gaiters if you wish.
Please provide a description of your experience level in bushwalking if I havent walked with you before! e.g give me some examples of some bushwalks/outdoor trips you have done before. If you do not do so, I may cancel your registration. Please also let me know if you have any off track navigational skills because I'm looking for at least one other participant to come along who has strong off-track navigational skills to act as a backup in case I make some navigational errors or become injured. Please also let me know if yoiu have a car/can drive.
Note that signing up does not guarantee a spot on this trip: you rspot is only confirmed once I contact you individually to let you know. I will aim to confirm the final group on wednesday or thursday morning. The final group size will be no more than 7-8 people.
Depart Canberra by 6am and drive to Yaouk area via Boboyan rd. Begin walking by 8am. Arrive at Sentry box mountain (hopefully) and return to cars by 5:30pm. If we are too slow to reach sentry box mountain and return to the cars by sunset, we'll turn back early so we don't have to walk in the dark.
