Skiers! The onset of spring is a great time for backcountry skiing - basically an adventure on skis away from the ski resort - with longer days and hopefully nice sunny weather. Plus the snow is good right now if you're high enough up! This is a chance to see the beauty of the Main Range of the Snowy Mountains, have fun learning experience on snow, and have a social day out with excellent ANUMC folks. If you fall over we might even get some photos.
The trip will use Alpine Touring skis. If you can do alpine (downhill) skiing you don't need to learn a new technique. The aim is to introduce or refresh club members in AT skiing, so I assume no prior experience in backcountry skiing. But there are conditions:
- Minimum alpine (downhill) skiing level is intermediate, ie you have to be comfortable skiing on blue runs in a ski resort.
- ANUMC ski equipment is quite fiddly and you have watch closely and quickly pick up the tricks of handling the skis and related gear. This can be your first time on backcountry gear but we'll expect you to go over your gear after you borrow it and be ready to use it on the day.
- Due to need for a lot of supervision to help people new to the gear, trip numbers will be limited. You need to show you'll contribute to club trips and ideally help organise future trips.
Likely destination is the Ramshead from either Dead Horse Gap or Thredbo ski resort, with a possible ski run into Leatherbarrel Creek. It will be at beginner pace and we'll have plenty of breaks, but you need to be ready for a full day of activity.
Email me on richardsalmons@gmail.com if you have any questions, and please indicate your interest below by Wednesday. I'll send an update confirming the group and the pre-trip will be on Thursday 31st.
