[Update 21 July: we have a few more folks registered for this trip, so I'm scheduling another pre trip meeting where you can hire gear and I can answer any questions. If that is you, I'll see you at 6.45 on Wednesday 28 July at the gear store.
For those who are already signed up: we have a few folks who would be doing this for the first time and the wind may be on the higher side. With that in mind I am pondering changing our plans to start from Dead Horse Gap, which would be more protected. We can confirm near the day but if you have any suggestions let me know!]
[Update 19 July: this trip has been postponed due to bad weather. We are now aiming for Sunday 28 July but may go for Saturday 27 July if the forecast conditions are better for that day.]
Original trip posting:
For those who are keen to get their backcountry stoke on without needing to camp, this trip may be for you!
I'm hoping to go a little further than the first couple of ski touring trips this season and try to find us some slightly steeper terrain to play in.
There are two options depending on how conditions develop over this week. If the weather gods favour us we can hope to see the snow line drop and may be able to head out from Guthega up to Guthega Trig and onto Mt Tate. There are some nice south facing slopes that we can ski until we decide to head back to Guthega. If the snow remains higher up we can switch up our plans and aim for Leatherbarrel Creek, which would involve getting the Thredbo chairlift up and heading past Ramshead. We won't need to decide until just beforehand - noting there may be a fair bit of snow the day before.
This trip is weather dependent and if the wind forecast or the road conditions are prohibitive we may need to postpone.
To get the most out of this trip you would need to be able to ski blue (intermediate) runs in the resort or have some experience with skiing ungroomed terrain. If you're a confident downhill skier (for example you have experience with powder skiing) but have not skied in the backcountry, then by all means sign up - the rest you can pick up as we go.
If you don't have all the equipment (AT or telemark ski setup) then you can hire everything you need at the pretrip.
If you are a splitboarder then my commiserations on your life choice but also you are most welcome.
If everyone has their own gear and is comfortable with backcountry skiing we may skip the pretrip.
