[UPDATE 16 SEP: This trip is cancelled - no snow!]
I’m looking to get some expressions of interest from folks who are good skiers and who want to ski terrain on the north and western side of the main range where the terrain is more challenging. Doing so can’t be done on a day trip (unless you’re much fitter than I am, which admittedly is very possible) so we’d be looking to camp. Departure from Thredbo, Guthega or Charlotte Pass for discussion depending on our exact goal.
To join this trip you’ll need to:
- Be an advanced downhill skier - ie ski black runs with confidence and get down pretty much any ungroomed terrain
- Have skied in the Australian backcountry a few times so you know what the conditions can be like and how to control your backcountry skis. Sidecountry in Japan on powder skis doesn’t count!
- Have snow camped before, or at least have extensive experience camping with a full pack.
- Ideally, know what it’s like to ski with a heavy pack.
The trip going ahead on this particular weekend will depend on the snowpack and the weather forecast being favourable. If it’s not looking good I will look to reschedule and I’ll be in touch with the group to ascertain preferences.
Even if you’re not available on this weekend I’d still like to hear from you if you are an advanced skier looking to do this kind of trip at some stage. On the same note, if you're interested in intermediate to advanced but not a fan of snow camping then let me know and maybe we can do a day trip instead.
I’ve skied in this area only once so if you have more experience and have some advice then I’d love to learn from your wisdom - even if you don’t actually come on the trip.
It's TBC whether beacon and probe are required or if the club has enough to supply a whole trip. If you have your own beacon and probe that would be a bonus.
