Hey everyone!
I'm excited to announce a side project that I've had on my mind for a while. Should enough members be interested, I'm hoping to put together a schedule of meet ups and teaching sessions that cover the skills, practices and knowledge required to lead climbing trips safely and effectively.
In recent years, several of the ANUMC's senior members have left the club, taking with them a large amount of our skill base. The relatively small amount of climbing trip leaders has become a bottleneck in our efforts to provide trips to the unusually high portion of new/beginner climbers. It also means that the ANUMC runs the risk of losing an amount of its knowledge of safety and technical procedures down the line.
With this in mind, these sessions aim to achieve two goals:
- Training up would-be trip leaders, providing them the knowledge and confidence required to lead climbing trips.
- Inviting experienced members to both teach others and contribute together towards establishing uniform and agreed-upon procedures for outdoor climbing.
I would like to extend an invite both experienced members keen to teach and share their knowledge, as well as moderately-experienced members looking to lead trips and support the club. The content and topics of these meet-ups will largely be contingent on the needs of the club, and is open of course to the input of experienced members. It's an opportunity to meet together and share knowledge, and sessions are likely to take place at popular ANUMC crags and in more social settings.
