Bungonia is a large, open gorge with big abseils and speccy waterfalls, about 1.5 hours' drive from Canberra. It is a very long day with a steep walk out, lots of rock scrambling, and tricky abseils. Because of this, attendees on this trip should be fit and have some prior abseiling or canyoning experience. I'm planning to run some learn to abseil sessions at the ANU wall in the weeks leading up to this trip, so those without abseil experience can learn to abseil before the trip.
Logistics
We'll do Bungonia as a day trip, leaving ANU Sport early on Sunday morning (7am) and getting back in the evening, depending on how long we take to get through the canyon. The canyon itself will likely take 8-10 hours car to car.
Group numbers will be limited to around 6-7 depending on experience levels and drivers.
Gear you need
Most of the gear you will need for this trip can be hired from the gear store (we can do this at the pre-trip meeting), but you will need to have the below items yourself to bring along:
- Shoes with good grip that you don't mind getting wet. Old sneakers are good. Volleys/vans make great canyoning shoes as they have good grip and being canvas, let water drain out.
- Socks you don't mind getting wet - preferably wool or synthetic as they keep you warmer than cotton.
- Thermals you don't mind getting wet - synthetic or wool. Top and bottom.
- Sunscreen and hat
- Lunch, snacks, minimum 1.5 L water bottle
- Comfortable hiking clothes for the walk in and out.
